Training Load Management: Why Athletes Get Hurt in the Weeks They Feel Best
Training load management is the practice of matching how much work you do to how much work your body is currently prepared for.
Most non-contact sports injuries follow a sharp rise in load rather than a high load by itself, which is why athletes often get hurt in the weeks they feel strongest and train hardest.
The practical rule is that fitness protects you and sudden change hurts you, so build load gradually and treat any large week-on-week jump as a risk you have chosen to take.
Ask an injured athlete what happened and you rarely hear about a tackle. You hear something like this: the season was going well, they felt fit, they added an extra session, the coach called a double week, and then the calf went in the warm-up.
Nothing dramatic happened at the moment of injury. The injury was built over the preceding three weeks and simply arrived on a Tuesday.
Understanding why is one of the most useful things an athlete can learn, and it is the thinking behind our sport-specific conditioning work.
What "load" actually means
Load is everything your body has to absorb and recover from. That includes the obvious things, like kilometres run, overs bowled, minutes played and kilos lifted.
It also includes intensity, which is why an easy hour and a hard hour are not the same hour at all. Most systems capture this by multiplying the duration of a session by how hard it felt on a simple one to ten scale, which gives a single number per session that you can add up across a week.
The reason this crude method survives is that it works better than it has any right to. An athlete's own sense of effort quietly accounts for heat, sleep, illness, exam stress and a bad night with a newborn, none of which show up on a GPS watch.

Acute versus chronic: the idea that explains most injuries
The central concept is the relationship between two numbers. Your acute load is roughly what you have done in the last week.
Your chronic load is your rolling average over the last month or so, which represents what your body has genuinely adapted to. The comparison between them, often called the acute to chronic workload ratio, describes whether this week is normal for you or a shock.
When this week looks much like your recent average, you are working inside your prepared capacity. When this week is far above it, you are asking tissue to do something it has not been prepared for, and that is where a large share of muscle, tendon and bone stress injuries come from.
The ratio is not a precise predictor and it has been argued about heavily in sports science, but the underlying principle survives every argument: sudden change is the risk, and gradual build is the protection.

Read that table twice, because it contains the whole idea. The 48 kilometre week is not dangerous.

Why you get hurt in the weeks you feel best
This is the cruel part. Feeling good is exactly what causes the spike.
A block of consistent training makes you feel strong and motivated, so you add a session, push the tempo, accept the extra match, and stay for the optional fitness work. Every one of those decisions is individually sensible.
Stacked into one week they add up to the largest jump in load you have made all season.
The tissue does not care about your motivation. Tendon and bone adapt on a slow clock measured in weeks and months, while your enthusiasm can change in a single afternoon.
The gap between how quickly you can decide to do more and how slowly your body can prepare for more is where injuries live.

Two weeks away for a wedding, a family trip or an illness, then straight back into the pre-break routine on day one. Fitness drops faster than confidence does, so the old normal is now a spike.
The first week back should be deliberately smaller than the week you left on.
The season changeover
Cricket, football and badminton seasons start with a sudden burst of matches after a quiet off-season. The classic pattern is a bowler who has bowled almost nothing for six weeks and then bowls 20 overs across a weekend.

The new-goal jump
Signing up for a half marathon, joining a gym in January, or starting a new sport. The enthusiasm is genuine and the plan is usually far too fast.

How to add load without spiking
The old ten percent rule, meaning add no more than ten percent a week, is a simplification that no longer survives close inspection as a hard law. It is still a useful starting habit for anyone with no other system, mostly because it forces patience.
The better version is to think in blocks rather than single weeks.
- Build for two or three weeks, then hold or drop. A lighter week every third or fourth week is where adaptation actually catches up.
- Change one variable at a time. More distance or faster running, not both in the same week. New shoes or a new surface, not both.
- Count the hard days, not just the total. Three hard sessions in a week is a very different week from one hard and two easy, even at the same total.
- Protect the easy days. Most athletes ruin their plan by making easy days moderately hard, which leaves them neither recovered nor properly trained.
- Give any big jump a reason. A planned camp or a tournament block is a spike you have chosen and prepared for. A spike that happened by accident is the dangerous kind.
What load management is not
It is not an excuse to do less. It is not a promise that a well-managed athlete never gets hurt, because contact, awkward landings and plain bad luck exist.
And it is not a spreadsheet exercise. An athlete who tracks everything meticulously and ignores what their body is telling them has swapped one form of blindness for another.
The point of a load system is to make your decisions visible. Once you can see that this week is triple your normal, you can still choose to do it.
You are simply doing it with your eyes open, and you can plan the recovery around it.
The signals that mean back off
Load is a plan. Your body is the feedback.
These are the signs that the plan is ahead of the body, and they nearly always show up before an injury does.
- Pain that arrives earlier each session. A niggle at 40 minutes that becomes a niggle at 20 minutes is a clear downward trend.
- Morning stiffness in one specific spot. Especially a tendon, and especially if it takes longer to warm up each day.
- Soreness that outlasts 72 hours. Normal muscle soreness fades. Soreness that keeps extending is not soreness any more.
- Sleep and mood falling away. Both track training stress closely, and bad sleep slows every recovery.
- Performance dropping while effort rises. The same session feeling harder for a worse result is the clearest single warning there is.
A simple system anyone can run
You do not need software. A notebook or a phone note works.
After every session write two numbers: how many minutes, and how hard it felt out of ten. Multiply them.
Add the week up. Compare that total to the average of your last four weeks.
If this week is roughly in line with the average, carry on. If it is far above, ask whether that was deliberate.
Do that for a month and you will start to see your own pattern, including the specific type of week that precedes your niggles. Most athletes are genuinely surprised by what they find, because memory is a poor record and enthusiasm rewrites history.
Where this fits with everything else
Load management sits alongside the other two levers, not above them. Strength training raises the ceiling of what tissue can tolerate. Warm-ups prepare tissue for the session in front of it. Load management decides how quickly you are allowed to approach that ceiling.
Athletes who do all three are the ones who get to keep playing, and that is the entire point of performance physiotherapy.
