Return to Play by Sport: What Cricket, Football, Tennis and Running Each Demand

The short answer

General return to sport criteria such as 90 percent strength symmetry and a passed hop battery are the entry requirement, not the finish line.

Each sport then adds its own demand: cricket needs bowling or keeping workload rebuilt over weeks, football needs repeat sprinting and unplanned cutting, tennis and badminton need overhead load and multidirectional footwork under rally fatigue, and running needs graded weekly mileage.

Clearing the general tests without the sport-specific ones is the most common way athletes get re-injured.

Two athletes pass the same tests on the same afternoon. One returns to running and is fine.

One returns to competitive cricket and breaks down in the third spell. The tests were not wrong.

They were incomplete, because they measured what both athletes have in common and ignored everything their sports actually demand. The general criteria in our five return to sport tests are the entry fee.

The general gates, in one paragraph

Before any sport-specific work matters, an athlete should have strength within about 90 percent of the other side, a hop battery at 90 percent or better with clean landings, movement quality that holds up when tired, and genuine confidence in the limb. If those are not in place, nothing below applies yet.

Cricket: the sport where the count matters most

Cricket is unusual because its main load is countable and highly specific. A bowler's readiness is not really a strength question, it is a workload question.

You cannot bowl 20 overs in a weekend if you have bowled 12 in the previous month, no matter what your hop scores say.

The rebuilding process is a bowling load progression, run over weeks. It starts with short run-up deliveries at low intensity, builds through the run-up, then through intensity, then through consecutive days.

Trunk and hip control matter because the bowling action loads the lower back hard and asymmetrically, which is why lumbar problems dominate cricket injuries in bowlers.

  • Fast bowlers. A graded bowling progression measured in deliveries per session and sessions per week, plus back-to-back days rehearsed before a match.
  • Spinners. Lower impact but high repetition, so finger, shoulder and hip tolerance across long spells matters more than peak force.
  • Batters. Repeated running between wickets with turns, which is a deceptive load, plus rotational trunk tolerance.
  • Wicketkeepers. Repeated deep squatting and rising, hundreds of times, which is a knee and hip endurance demand nobody tests.
  • Fielding. Diving, throwing and sprinting from standstill, all of which are unplanned.

Football: unplanned cutting and repeat sprinting

Football's dominant demand is changing direction at speed while reacting to something you did not choose. Rehab that only trains planned cutting produces an athlete who looks excellent in the clinic and gets caught the first time an opponent moves unexpectedly.

The second demand is repeat sprint ability. Football is not endurance in the marathon sense, it is the ability to sprint, recover badly, and sprint again, dozens of times.

That capacity disappears fast during rehab and it is the difference between lasting 90 minutes and being a passenger after 60.

  1. Planned change of direction at increasing speed and sharper angles.
  2. Reactive cutting, responding to a call, a light or a coach, so the decision is not pre-made.
  3. Repeat sprint work rebuilt to a measured benchmark rather than a feeling.
  4. Contact exposure, progressing from none to shielding to full contested play.
  5. At least one or two full-intensity training weeks completed before the first match minutes.

Hamstrings deserve a specific mention because they are the most re-injured muscle in the sport. Eccentric strength work and exposure to genuine high-speed running, not just gym work, are what protect them, as covered in hamstring strains and football injury rehab.

Tennis and badminton: overhead load under rally fatigue

Racket sports combine two demands that rarely appear together. Overhead loading of the shoulder, repeated hundreds of times, and multidirectional footwork with constant deceleration, all under fatigue that builds through a rally rather than across a match.

Serving is the highest load action in tennis and it is the last thing to rebuild. A player can rally comfortably for weeks and still be nowhere near serve ready, because the serve loads the shoulder and trunk in a way nothing else does.

In badminton the equivalent is the repeated overhead smash combined with lunging into corners, which is brutal on knees and ankles.

The gate that catches players is testing when fresh. A shoulder that is fine for 20 serves can be a very different shoulder at serve 120, so late-session testing is the honest version.

Running: the sport where the ramp is the whole plan

Running has the simplest sport-specific criterion and the one most often ignored. It is weekly volume, built gradually.

Most running injuries are load injuries, so the return is a mileage progression rather than a test you pass on a single day.

A typical structure is walk-run intervals first, then continuous easy running, then volume, then and only then speed. Adding speed before volume is the classic error and it is why so many returning runners develop shin splints or Achilles pain in the third week rather than the first.

  • Pain-free walking first. If walking hurts, running is not a conversation yet.
  • Walk-run intervals, progressing the run portion before the total time.
  • Continuous easy running, building weekly volume, one variable at a time.
  • Speed work last, once volume is stable for a few weeks.
  • Surface and footwear held constant during the build, then changed one at a time.

Gym and lifting: load, range and bar path

Returning to lifting has its own gates: full pain-free range under load, symmetrical loading through the movement, and a progression that rebuilds working weight over weeks rather than testing a one-rep max to see what happens. The temptation to find out where you are is strong and it is how a lot of second injuries occur, which is a recurring theme in first-year gym injuries and returning to deadlifts and squats.

The rule that applies to every sport

Whatever the sport, the last gate is the same: your training must reach full match intensity before your first match, not during it. One or two complete weeks of full-intensity training, including the specific demand your sport loads hardest, is the difference between a return and a relapse.

Matches do not negotiate. They start at full pace, they last the full duration, and they contain the exact unplanned moment your rehab was avoiding.

Training is where you want to discover a gap, because training will let you stop. This is why every sport-specific ramp is built backwards from the demand rather than forwards from how you feel, and why load is rebuilt on the same principles that prevent the first injury.

Red flags during the return

A return that is going well feels progressively easier. These are the signs it is not, and every one of them is a reason to pause rather than push.

  • Swelling after sessions that was not there the week before.
  • Pain arriving earlier each session rather than later.
  • Giving way, locking or catching in a joint, which needs assessment rather than more training.
  • Compensating visibly, favouring one side, which usually means the session was too much.
  • Sharp, localised bone pain, especially with hopping, which should never be trained through.

None of these mean the return has failed. They mean the ramp was slightly ahead of the tissue, which is normal and fixable if you notice it early.

The athletes who get into real trouble are the ones who noticed and decided to see how it went.

Where the calendar allows a choice, preseason is considerably safer. It provides a natural ramp of training before competition, whereas returning mid-season means meeting full match intensity immediately with no build available. Preseason is effectively free rehab time.
